The pictures in this exhibit were taken as part of my graduate studies in photo communications at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. During the fall of 1993, I spent several weeks following carnival workers around the state of Ohio as they moved from festival to festival.
The workers I followed refer to themselves as "Carnies" and "Ride Jocks." They spend their summers traversing several states in the region, sleeping in trailers and working seven day weeks. They usually spend less than a week at each place they visit, and are often moving their equipment at night to set up in another town for a festival the following night. They refer to these overnight moves as "circus jumps."
