DJ breaks up shipping pallets which he would use as firewood to keep warm during the winter months. One of his friends in town would bring the pallets down to the floodwall for him to burn. The man was concerned that DJ might freeze during the winter's cold spells. DJ was the only one of the riverbank's residents who didn't leave his camp in the winter of 1994 - when temperatures in January plunged to 25 degrees below zero.
