Willie fished for crabs each day in the Hudson River. He would give them to friends, and he and Ida would eat them when they had no other food. He also sold them to a bar in the neighborhood which cooked them and sold them to customers. Most of the fishermen along the Hudson did not eat the fish they caught because of the high levels of pollutants in the water.
